Write to ADFG Leadership regarding inseason management of the Copper river fishery.
We are all concerned about and deeply invested in the health of the resource. If you feel compelled, you can use our email link above to email Commissioner Doug Vincent Lang, Director of Com Fish Forrest Bowers, Biologists Heather Scannell, Jeremy Botz, and Tracey Hansen.
A quick email is all you need. Keep it short and direct. Below are some highlights that may be helpful.
Things to focus on:
The Copper River Commercial Fishery has been heavily restricted since the departments data along with NVE’s mark recapture program indicate low in-river abundance.
Retention of King Salmon in the Gulkana Sport Fishery is still allowed and no restrictions have been placed on retention yet for the Klutina and Tonsina which open July 1st.
All users of the Copper River Basin must share the burden of conserving king salmon to ensure adequate escapement and promote stewardship of our resources.
You can also address:
The need for clear, consistent, and predictable management
Ensuring that emergency restrictions don’t quietly become permanent
Addressing the lack of robust in-season king escapement and harvest data
Recognizing the fleet as a valuable source of conservation data, not just a user group
Investing in long-term monitoring and recovery strategies
The need for local managers and biologists, with their extensive knowledge of our area and fishery, to have the power to make the call on our openers.
